SAP Operation Modes are crucial for optimizing system performance by dynamically allocating system resources such as background processing, dialog tasks, and spool work processes. In this blog, we'll walk you through the step-by-step process of understanding, creating, and managing SAP Operation Modes.       

          

Pre-requisites for Configuring Operation Modes

Before setting up SAP Operation Modes, ensure the following:

  • SAP Basis Access: You should have SAP Basis administration privileges.
  • Knowledge of Work Processes Allocation: Understanding how various SAP work processes function.
  • System Peak Load Information: Identify peak dialog user time and periods for background job execution.

Follow these steps to configure operation modes in SAP:

 Log into SAP System

  • Enter transaction code RZ04 to open the “Maintain Operation Modes and Instances” screen.

Create a New Operation Mode

  • From the main menu, click on Operation Mode > Create or Click on Create Icon.

Provide a name, Short Description for the new operation mode (e.g., "DAY" for daytime or "NIGHT" for off-peak).


Click on Save icon to save the operation mode.

  • From the main menu, click on Operation Mode > Create or Click on Create Icon.

After adding Name and Short Description Click on Save icon to save the Operation Mode.
                                        

Click on Instances/operations mode.


Click on create Icon to Create new Instance for Operation Modes.


Give Hostname and select Start Profile.


Select START_DVEBMGS00.


Click on Instance profile name to select Instance Profile.


Click on V04_DVEBMGS00.


Click on Save Icon to save the Instance.


Click on Operation Mode tab to select Operation Mode.


Select The Day Mode.


Assign the work processes according to the requirements:
  • For Dialog-intensive times (e.g., daytime), increase Dialog (DIA) work processes.
  • For Background-intensive times (e.g., nighttime), increase Background (BTC) work processes.
Example Allocation:
  • DAY Mode: 9 Dialog, 4 Background, 1 Spool, 1 Update.
  • NIGHT Mode: 5 Dialog, 8 Background, 1 Spool, 1 Update.
Click on Background then Click on + Icon To increase the Work Process assignment.


Click on Other Operation Mode. and then select the Night Mode.


After selecting The Night Mode select The Background Work Process and then Click on + Icon to increase the Work Process. 


 Save Changes

  • After assigning work processes, save your changes.


Click on Yes to Save Wp distribution.


Click on No.


Scheduling and Activating Operation Modes

After configuring the operation modes, SAP allows you to schedule and activate them automatically.


Use transaction code SM63 to schedule the activation of operation modes.


Click on Change and define the time frames for switching between different operation modes.


Select the Time range from from 8.00 to 19.00 while selecting double click it it will become black font.
then Click on Assign.


Here Select the Operation Mode.


Select the DAY Mode.


Select the Unassigned Time range from from 19.00  to 8.00 while selecting double click it it will become black font. then Click on Assign.


Click on Op. Mode. and Select The Night Mode.

Click on Save Icon to save Time Table.
                                           



Manual Switch Between Modes (if necessary)

  • If required, manually switch between operation modes via transaction RZ03.


Click on Choose Operation mode.


Select The Day Mode then Click on Choose.


Select Menu  Control -> Switch Operation Mode -> All Server. Or Use Shift + F7.


Click on Yes to Switch the DAY Mode.


Go To SM50 T-Code to View Work Process Overview.


Here You can See the Work Process Distribution which we Assigned For DAY mode.
9 Dialog and 4 Background Work Process.


Adjust Work Process Allocation

  • If performance issues arise, revisit RZ04 to adjust the number of work processes assigned to each operation mode.
